The coastal cycle route runs past the front door

Usedom can be explored almost entirely by bike — flat, well surfaced, and with the island railway as a return ticket when the headwind wins.

Three rides from Karlshagen

What fits into a single day

North: Peenemünde, approx. 9 km one way

Through the Peenemünde woods to the northern tip of the island. The destination is the Historical Technical Museum. On the way back the harbour is worth a detour.

South: Zinnowitz and Trassenheide, approx. 6 km

Along the water the whole way, past the butterfly farm in Trassenheide to the pier at Zinnowitz. The shortest of the three rides and the one with the most excuses for a break.

The long loop: the imperial spas, approx. 30 km one way

Ahlbeck, Heringsdorf and Bansin lie in the south-east. Ride out, take the Usedomer Bäderbahn back — bicycles are carried. This is the ride you set a whole day aside for.

Baltic Sea Cycle Route

Part of a very long route

The Baltic Sea Cycle Route follows the entire German Baltic coast and continues across Usedom into Poland. Karlshagen sits directly on it — riders doing several days can use the hotel as a base or as a stage stop.

The island is flat. Wind is the only hill here, and it usually comes from the west.

Combination

Bike and train, thought of together

The Usedomer Bäderbahn runs from Peenemünde to Świnoujście and carries bicycles. That changes route planning fundamentally: you no longer have to ride back what you rode out.

For guests arriving without a car it also means the bike can come along — details are on the page Arriving without a car.
