In the north of Usedom, 50 metres from the water

Karlshagen sits in the quiet north of the island — less bustle than the imperial spas, but a wider beach and more space. Here is how to get here and what applies on arrival day.

Onto the island via Wolgast

A20 motorway to Anklam or Züssow

From Berlin and Hamburg the route runs along the A20. Allow more time for the last kilometres on the island than the navigation system suggests — in summer the approach to the Peene bridge in Wolgast regularly backs up.

The Peene bridge at Wolgast

This bascule bridge is the only northern access to the island and opens for ships several times a day. Tight schedules do not survive it.

B111 towards Zinnowitz, exit Karlshagen

From Wolgast it is about 13 kilometres. In Karlshagen follow the signs to the beach — the Strandpromenade is at the edge of the village towards the dunes.

Without a car

By train all the way to Karlshagen

Karlshagen has its own station on the Usedomer Bäderbahn line. From Berlin, Hamburg or Leipzig you travel to Züssow and change onto the UBB there — the rest is a ride along the water.

The whole island is served by the UBB, from Peenemünde in the north to Świnoujście in the south. Arriving without a car does not mean being stuck.

The full guide with connections, taking bikes along and the way from the station to the hotel is on the page Arriving without a car.
